Checking peptide names, CAS numbers and sequence records

A short product name is a starting point for a documentation request. Before treating two listings as interchangeable, ask whether their documented identities and forms match the material required by your laboratory.

Make a material identity record

Copy fields exactly from the supplier record; mark missing fields as missing. Do not complete a sequence, chemical form or identifier from a similarly named internet listing.

• Catalogue code and full name used on the quotation.
• CAS number, where supplied, together with the source document.
• Sequence or other identity specification, where relevant to the material.
• Any stated modification, terminal form, salt or counterion.
• Pack quantity, quantity basis and physical format.
• Lot number and the document version used to check it.

This is a procurement checklist, not a claim that every field applies to every material. Ask your technical reviewer which identifiers and tests are needed for the intended research.

Resolve ambiguous names before substitution

Names such as “TB-500” or “CJC” should not be used to infer an undisclosed sequence or modification. If the listing does not establish the exact form required, ask for a specification and supporting identity documentation. An unresolved identifier should remain unresolved in your purchasing record.

For example, a useful request is: “Our requirement specifies ___. Please confirm the full identity and form proposed under catalogue code ___ and identify the document that supports the match.” Avoid a request that asks only whether two names are “the same”.

Carry the identity through receipt

Match the approved quotation to the label and the lot-specific certificate when the package arrives. If the supplier proposes a substitute, obtain a revised record and technical decision before accepting it into the planned work. Keep the original request so changes remain visible.

Use documentation to request missing fields, then follow the COA receipt checklist. For institutional requirements, include the identity specification in your laboratory enquiry.
