COA versus SDS: which research document do you need?
A certificate of analysis helps you examine reported batch test results. A safety data sheet (SDS) provides hazard and handling information. Asking for “the documentation” can leave either need unanswered: name the record and the material when you contact the supplier.
Two documents, two checks

An SDS supports a workplace risk assessment; it is not that assessment. Your activity, exposure route and existing controls still need consideration. HSE explains this distinction in its safety data sheet guidance.
Before placing an order
Write down which records your laboratory requires before receipt and which are needed before release. Include the product code, proposed quantity and the exact document request. If a document is pending, decide under your own procedures whether the order should wait. Do not assume that buying a pack automatically supplies every record required by your institution.
When the order arrives
Keep the lot-specific certificate with the receipt record. Keep the applicable safety document and its version accessible to the people assessing handling. If labels, names or documents disagree, record the discrepancy and ask for clarification rather than merging the records under one familiar name.
A COA does not replace safety information. An SDS does not establish that a particular batch met a laboratory specification. Neither document alone proves suitability for an experiment or authorises human use.
